Gustavian Brass Candlesticks, Sweden 18th century

About the Item

Gustavian Brass Candlesticks. Made in Sweden during the reign of Gustav III. The brass used in these candlesticks have high levels of copper, giving the candlesticks a warm golden glow. The ornamentation is typical of Gustavian pieces, reflecting an elegant neoclassical understanding of architectural composition and material. The small and refined dentils (small rectangular elements) circle the column at various points around the base and the capital. Wear consistent with age and use. One of the candlesticks was restored in the 19th century, resulting in one the candlesticks being riveted under the base (the modification is not visible unless one looks under the base).
