Pair of Japanese Bronze Candle Sticks, circa 1912-1926

About the Item

Impeccably cast of bronze alloy, this pair of early 20th century shokudai, or candle stands, is a spectacular example of traditional Japanese metalwork. The elegant shokudai have a classic design often used for Buddhist altar shrines, featuring a sinuous, tapered base and a flared candle dish shaped as a lotus leaf. Visually similar to turned wooden posts, these fine candlesticks are sculpted with fluid lines and repeated curves, darkened by a rich patina that imitates a smooth lacquer finish. The base is etched with Japanese characters that date the pair to the Taisho period (1912-1926).

In an exclusive collaboration, each hand-studded piece by artist Brian Stanziale was transformed from a provincial 19th century artifact into a one-of-a-kind work of art. Embellishing with silver and gold thumbtacks, Stanziale adds a contemporary twist to our storied objects, animating each surface with bold and provocative designs. Carved from the cylindrical form of a single bamboo segment, this 19th century headrest was originally used to preserve intricate hairstyles during sleep. The artist enhanced the headrest's unusual form, re-imagining the piece on its side as a decorative candle sconce. Its golden interior casts a warm glow over its surroundings, lit by the twinkling light of a tealight or votive candle set...
