About the Item

France / 1950 / pair of candlesticks / Vallerysthal & Portieux / uranium glass / Mid-century / Vintage A beautiful example of glass candlesticks made of cast uranium glass or anna green glass. These rare candlesticks have beautiful cut motifs and dolphin feet. Uranium glass is famous for its breathtaking fluorescent effect under UV light. This set was made by the French glass atelier Vallerysthal & Portieux in the 1950s. They are real collectors' items. The Portieux Vallerysthal Company was founded in 1705 in Vosgues, France, produced beautiful glass objects under the patronage of Duke Leopold of Lorraine. Uranium glass is glass to which a uranium compound has been added, often uranium dioxide or sodium diuranate. Usually small amounts of uranium (2%) are involved. The glass has a green or yellow colour that lights up (fluoresces) under ultraviolet radiation. It is slightly radioactive but not harmful to health. Uranium glass was produced on a fairly large scale between 1870 and 1940. It has been used in art objects, lamps, bowls, medicine bottles, household objects and jewellery.
