Part of ACOOCOORO’s Ceremonia special series, Copaleras (incense burners) create a play between their soft appearance, their ceremonial function and their ambiguous materiality, moulded in resin and turned brass. They suggest the presence of magical events, of an intimate ritual. They show evidence of a ritual’s emotional archeology: the burning of copal (aromatic resin) and fragrant herbs, used to purify the place where the act takes place, as well as its participants.
The signs of time, history, and use are valuable for ACOOCOORO. The brass used in this piece is meant to reflect the passage of time, and may change and age in appearance.
