About the Item

Maker: James McCabe, # 2748. Description: A good English mid-19th century ormolu eight-day double fusee carriage clock. Case: The typical McCabe case has beveled glasses to 4 sides, a folding handle with a reeded center and a lift-out shuttered back door engraved with the needed indications. Dial: The silvered, elaborately engraved dial has Roman numerals for the hours, steel-cut hands and is signed ‘Jas. McCabe, London’. Movement: The eight-day twin-fusee movement has well-cut wheelwork, a push-button repeat, is wound and set off the backplate, strikes on a large coiled gong and is engraved ‘Jas McCabe, London, 2478’. The balance platform above has an underslung lever escapement with a monometallic balance wheel. Notes: The engraving on the dial was most likely done by Thomas Cole who was part of McCabe’s workshop between 1825-43. The seemingly original travel case has gilt initials on top and a restored purple felt interior. Ref: James McCabe was responsible for some of the best English carriage clocks of the 19th century. Unless otherwise noted all our clocks were properly serviced, sold in working condition, fitted with the proper size keys, and guaranteed mechanically for 1 year. The original gilding was cleaned and the movement serviced. There are some worn areas on the back corners and some light scratching as seen in the overall images. The case could be refinished, but the gold is original and the vast majority of it is ok so we decided to leave it 'as is' for now. Arrangements could be made to have it redone.

A one of a kind english twin fusee carriage clock by James Moore French. The eight day movement has a large English jewelled level escapement with compensated bimetallic balance. The movement is wound and set through a round glazed door at the back and can be regulated from the outside as the fast/slow arm extends through the back of the case with rack striking the hour and half hour on blued steel gong with trip repeat. The gilt dial is signed as is th back plate of the movement, the centre of the dial is engraved with foliate scroll work with a roman chapter and breguet style moon hands. The unusual case of case bronze in a rococo revival style is finely chased with fluted sides flanked by Cariatids with a swag of fruit and flowers strung between them, th handle is formed of two dolphins. James Moore French was born in 1781 in County Antrim, Ireland. He was the son of Dr Hugh French and Sarah (née Arundel) French who married his father in 1763 and died in 1783, two years after James’s birth. In 1784, the year after Sarah’s death, Dr Hugh French married a widow named Judith Woodward who was to raise the young James French as her own, alongside his own and his half siblings.
