About the Item

A fine late 18th-century English George III bracket clock, signed Sam Tregent, London. The ebonised case is surmounted by a brass carrying handle and adorned with cast gilt bronze floral and scroll mounts to the sides, corners, and base. The arched brass dial features a silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals, a finely matted center, and a date aperture above VI. A subsidiary dial in the arch offers strike/silent selection. The spandrels are adorned with pierced foliate gilt brass. Movement: Twin fusee movement with verge escapement, striking the hour on a bell. High-quality engraving and fine craftsmanship throughout, in line with Tregent’s reputation as a clockmaker to the British royal court. Samuel Tregent (fl. 1765–1803) was a respected London maker and Clockmaker to George III. He is listed in Baillie’s Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World and is known for producing both domestic and royal commission timepieces. His bracket clocks are particularly sought after.
