About the Item

Empire mantel clock pendule. Depickting a putto with a flower garland on top. On the front a gilt bronze ornament with swans Fully hand carved of sculpted alabaster and fire gilded bronze ornaments Style Empire, Restauration period 1820s Colors: White and gold Condition: very good. The color of the white alabaster is in a great condition. The corners of the alabaster has some wear due to age. Measures: H 16.9 in. x W 7.9 in. x D 4.5 in. H 43 cm x W 20 cm x D 11.5 cm. Alabaster Alabaster has some of the most beautiful translucent and opaque properties of all types of natural stone. alabaster is fine-grained and solid plaster that has been used for centuries for sculptures and other ornaments. The naturally white alabaster is snow white and translucent, but can be artificially painted and made opaque and heat treated to look like marble and is known as marmo di Castellina. Alabaster sometimes also occurs in other shades such as light brown and reddish. Alabaster has been used for sculptures since time immemorial. There are sculptures known from the 9th century BC from Iraq, but also from ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. Alabaster was also used for windows in Byzantine churches and later in medieval churches, especially in Italy. Medieval and Renaissance sculptors also made use of alabaster and alabaster was often used in the subsequent style periods. A visually beautiful property of alabaster is that the light from a source transmits, diffuses the light, but does not substantially change the color The movement was cleaned and overhauled by a master watchmaker The watch has an 8-day movement. It comes complete with the winding key and the pendulum. It sounds every half and full hour.
