English Regency Fusee Mantel Clock, by Viner in Ormolu and Derbyshire Marble

About the Item

English Regency ormolu and Derbyshire black marble mantel clock. Typical drum shaped clock, set on four elaborate ormolu toupee feet. The Derbyshire black marble base has an applied ormolu mount of flowers and fruit to the front. The ormolu drum case sits upon scroll supports in turn above fine ormolu moulding of leaf and dart decoration. The gilt bronze dial with engine turned centre has black Roman numerals and superb heart shaped hands in blued steel in the manner favoured by Payne. The bezel surrounding the dial is extremely finely decorated with concentric lines of beading, hatching and milling ( the latter is also used on the feet). The movement is a fine quality English 8 day fusee and chain movement regulated by the fine and original pendulum. The back plate is signed "Viner New Bond Street" According to Baillie, Charles Edward Viner was apprenticed in London from 1802, joined the Clockmakers Company in 1813, and was a full Liveryman Clockmakers Company member from 1819-40
