About the Item

Fine 19th Century French Ormolu and Bronze Mantel Clock with Marble Case A finely cast French mantel clock dating to the third quarter of the 19th century, in the Louis XVI revival style. The white marble case is richly embellished with gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts, including floral garlands, foliate scrolls and classical motifs. A patinated bronze figure of a winged putto is seated atop, surrounded by a globe, telescope, star chart and scroll — symbolic of learning, discovery and the Enlightenment spirit. The enamel dial with Roman numerals is framed by a gilt bezel, and fitted with blued steel hands. The two winding holes indicate an eight-day movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell. Of very good quality throughout, with attractive gilding and sharp definition to the bronze work. France, circa 1860–1880 Dimensions: Height: 52 cm Width: 46 cm Depth: 17 cm Condition: In working order. Old repair to one foot; some age-related crazing to the dial; crack to the rear marble panel. Minor wear to gilding, but bright and consistent overall. A heavy and highly decorative piece.
