With its matching pair of vase-form four-light candelabras, each decorated with pastoral romantic scene and bunch of flowers on the reverse. With its original pendulum, the movement signed S.Marti et Cie Médaille de Bronze Napoléon III Period Louis XVI Style Circa 1880 The eclecticism of the Second Empire, the mixture of the traditions of the past with the de-velopment of modernism, will be called «a style without style». Indeed, the «style» Napoleon III is rather the combination of different past styles adapted to the modern era to correspond to an era of innovative dynamic transformation. The Second Empire is a period that seeks to reconcile progress and innovation with tradition and historicism: it is the crossroads between a desire to evolve towards a promising future and a persistent feeling of attachment to the past. This phenomenon is characterized by the «crisis of modernism» embodied by the Romanticism of the 19th Century.
