Large Malachite, Gilt and Patinated Bronze Clock Set

About the Item

This majestic, neoclassical style clock set – the clock of which measures 1m and the candelabra 1m 11cm in height – will make a bold statement in an interior. With its magnificent patinated bronze putti, the design transcends the boundaries between sculpture, clock-making and objet de vertu. The set consists of three semi-nude bronze figures, which stand on circular green malachite bases, set on fluted gilt bronze (ormolu) feet. These gemstone bases are encircled by gilt bronze foliate bands, and the central model set with gilt bronze pinecones. Standing at the centre is a putto who raises both hands to support a circular, gilt bronze clock case above his head. The clock case which is draped with flower garlands frames a white enamel dial, inscribed with Roman numerals and Arabic numbers. The flanking putti are similarly posed. Each putto holds a gilt bronze flower and pinecone bouquet in one hand, and a four-light, gilt bronze candelabrum in the other. The scrolled, foliate branches of the candelabra terminate in wide, foliate drip-pans with beaded edges, simple leafy capitals, and candle tubes. Measures: Clock: Height 100 cm, width 41 cm, depth 32 cm Candelabra: Height 111 cm, width 40 cm, depth 31 cm.

This three-piece set—composed of a clock and a pair of flanking candelabra—is a truly unique and delightful piece of decorative art. The clock is modelled in the image of an 18th century sedan chair – that is, a covered chair sat in by a member of the social elite, which was carried on poles by two people. This chair-shaped clock case is crafted from gilt bronze (ormolu) and decorated with festoons and a flower finial. At its centre, there is a circular white enamel dial, which features Arabic Numbers, colorful swag paintings, and the manufacturer’s name, 'Fd Gervais / Ft du Bronzes / A Paris'. The lower part of the case is glazed, allowing one to see the clock’s sun-burst pendulum. Like a sedan chair, the clock case is carried by two patinated bronze putti...
