About the Item

A Louis Philippe Gilt-Bronze 'Reims Cathedral' Musical Mantel Clock, The Clock Movement By J. Charles, Paris. The Musical Movement By Martinet & Benoit, Geneva. Modelled as the West facade of Reims Cathedral. The twin-towers above the gallery of kings, composed of statues. A pierced clock dial with enamel Roman chapters in place of the large rose window, flanked by tall arched windows. The central portal is devoted to the Virgin Mary. The statuary of the south portal depicts the Last Judgement and the north portal depicts the Crucifixion of Christ. On ebonised spreading base with marquetry decoration enclosing a concealed musical movement. The eight-day twin-train movement with silk suspension and countwheel balance striking the quarters on two gongs. The cylinder and comb musical movement with three levers for control. The dial signed ‘J. Charles. Paris’. The clock movement signed ‘J. CHARLES / A PARIS’ and numbered ‘6470’. The musical movement signed ‘Martinet & Benoit. Geneva’. There is a pendulum and winding key for the clock and musical workings. France, Circa 1835. Clocks such as these represent the definitive Gothic Revival, in that they seek to be accurate reductions without invention. The publication of Victor Hugo's novel, Notre-Dame de Paris, in 1831, promoted the fashion for such models. Other makers include Vaugermé, who produced a model of the cathedral of Paris and Eugène Renduel offered Victor Hugo in 1836 a bronze clock representing Notre Dame de Paris. The foundry Bavozet Frères et Sœurs presented a clock representing the facade of Reims cathedral at the exhibition Products de l'industrie of 1834. It is today in the collection of the King of Sweden and is illustrated in Un âge d'or des arts décoratifs 1814-1848, Exhibition Catalogue, Galeries nationales du Grand Palais, 10 October-30 December 1991, Paris, No. 157, pp. 303-304. The present example is distinguished by the addition of a musical movement which can be set to strike on the hour and manually by the levers to the side. The fashion for the Neo-Gothic was part of the Romantic Movement in art and literature connected to a desire to preserve Medieval history against ecclesiastical and industrial changes. This hallowed nostalgia was reflected in the establishment of societies for the preservation of ancient buildings, and the value of Gothic architecture is a primary theme in Victor Hugo’s lament to Notre-Dame. It is all the more fascinating therefore that such a definitive object of the Gothic Revival is coupled with a musical movement, which was something of a technical marvel at the time. Comparative Literature: Ottomeyer et Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Vol. I., Munich, 1986, . p416., fig. 6.1.3.
