Louis XVI Miniature Ormolu Mantle Clock of a Lion by Philippe Pajot

About the Item

A rare 18th century to early 19th century Louis XVI miniature ormolu mantle or table clock depicting a lion. The piece is surprising heavy for such a small clock, which is always a sign of quality. The case stamped underneath Pajot. Antoine Philippe Pajot (c.1730- 1781 Paris). Pajot, a ciseleur, chiefly made furniture mounts and mounts for porcelain and glass but seemingly rarely clock cases. There is an example in the British Royal Collection and a cartel clock was sold in Paris in 2014. The white enamel convex dial with roman numerals is signed Roger a Larcenal. Convex glass to the front door and glass to the back door. The fine fusee chain 30 hour movement is signed on the back Grayhurst,Harvey & Co. Strand, London, who Baillie mentions working in the Strand, London from 1805-30. The case surmounted by fruit over a drum case. Superb and rare little clock.
