About the Item
A Very Attractive And Extremely Good Quality Mid 19th Century Rosewood Letter Tray, Of Unusually Diminutive Proportions, Having Exceptionally Well Figured Top With Studworlk Decoration To Galleried Sides And Stylish Original Turned Carrying Handles.
This elegant little tray was almost certainly originally purposed as a letter tray. In simple terms that means that when the post was delivered, one of the staff would use this tray to collect it from the front door and transport it to the study of owner of the house.
For something with such a relatively simple original purpose this tray is really quite beautiful. It is constucted from very good quality rosewood which is hughly figured and retains a wonderful colour and patina.
Overall the condition is good, with just a few old repairs evident to the gallery and the handles. However everything is original and there repairs fall under just general wear and tear for something of this age. Certainly there is nothing visually displeasing and from a structural point of view the tray is sound and perfectly fit for purpose.
Talking of purpose it seems the perfect size for not just its original purpose, but also for perhaps serving a couple of drinks from, or an elaborate way of serving ones tea or coffee in bed of a morning. It would also serve a purpose as just a very elegant, different object, or piece of art in a room that is attractive visually.
Circa 1840.
Height 3.5in.

A Good Quality And Unusually Small Georgian Mahogany Butlers Tray, Of Diminutive Proportion, Having Elegant Shaped Sides With Pierced Carrying Handles And Well Figured Top, Housed On Later Square Chamfered Leg Mahogany Stand.
During the 18th and 19th centuries a coffee table was not what we regard as a coffee table in the 21st century. Coffee tables back then were always full height, effectively side tables. The modern, low, coffee table is really something which began to be seen during the early 20th century onwards.
Based on the above there is a variety of different methods to incorporate a coffee table into an interior for people who wish to furnish their properties with genuine antique furniture, whilst still allowing for the practicalities and function which is required in modern times.
Therefore it is now incredibly common to find 18th and 19th century trays of varying shape, size and design utilised as coffee tables. As with all the others that we have seen this particular tray has been fitted onto a low, practical and sturdy stand constructed from old antique wood. It’s worth noting that generally this means an old broken table...
