Antique Italian green marble and 'lava cameo' inkstand
Italian, 19th century
Measures: Height 10cm, diameter 14cm
This charming inkstand is crafted from green marble and gilt metal. The body of the inkstand contains recessed inkwells and penholders framed with gilt bronze. The removable cover, also of green marble, is inset with six ‘lava cameos’, each crafted in a classicising style. The piece is a superb example of nineteenth-century Grand Tour souvenirs.
The piece was purchased by the previous owner from Gerard Conte Antiquaire, Paris in May 2000.

Stunning and Rare Example of a French Patinated Bronze Architectural Style Grand Tour Regency Period Double Inkstand of rectangular outline and compact proportions. First quarter of the Nineteenth Century.
This stunning offering is modelled as an ancient Gothic Style Religious building ending on a well veined Sienna Marble platform base. The Ormolu dome top finial covers complete with their internal bronze linings. An early ormolu and Sienna Marble Watch stand is included.
Condition: Good condition, original good surface patination, small repair to corner of marble base, see image. Baise underneath has been replaced, nicely done. Back and front views are similar, no visible foundry marks.
Height: (inkstand) 5.25" (13.5cm). Width: (at base) 7" (17.5cm). Depth: (at base) 4” (10.25cm).

This very stylish French Empire gilt bronze and marble inkstand is a fine example.
It is made from superb figured green marble. The triform base is raised onto bronze pads. The main inkwell body is in matching green figured marble which is raised onto ornate lion’s paw feet. The body is beautifully hand turned and separated with ormolu mounts and a lift off cover.
Inside the git interior is inset with an original glass liner for ink.
This very pleasing piece is in excellent original condition with very little sign of wear to the original gilding.
