About the Item

Iridescent Glass Inkwell with Brass Lid Origin: Bohemia or Germany Material: mold-blown glass, brass Date: circa 1900 Dimensions: H × D: approx. 6.5 × 6.5 cm Description: Cylindrical inkwell made of thick-walled, iridescent glass with a shimmering surface in green, gold, and violet tones. The smooth body features a slightly flared rim and is topped with a hinged brass lid, adorned with a central laurel wreath motif in relief. The upper rim of the glass is ground flat and set into a precisely fitted brass collar. The lid closes flush, and the interior retains its original glass ink insert. Remarks: The iridized surface reflects techniques pioneered around 1900 by the Loetz glassworks in Klostermühle (Bohemia). Objects of this kind were especially popular in the German-speaking world. The underside of the lid bears a stamped registration mark: D.R.G.M. 158180 This indicates a Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster (German registered utility model), most likely for the technical design of the lid mechanism. The relatively low number suggests a registration date around the turn of the century. An additional mark, “G.E.P. 10385”, was probably used for export purposes to English-speaking markets. Condition: Used condition. Brass with patina and typical age-related wear. Glass body intact, original inner insert shows traces of use.
