About the Item

19th century English Leuchars & Sons brass inlaid boulle inkstand with spiral crystal inkwell, circa 1850. The inlaid base has cameos of cupids framed in a scrolled inlaid design. The spiral crystal inkwell has a hinged lid with an incised gilt band that is marked "Leuchars 38 Piccadilly." Leuchars was a renowned maker of dressing cases and inkwells established in 1794 by James Leuchars in Piccadilly, London. They exhibited in 1851 at the Great Exhibition and again at the International Exhibition of 1862. Their dressing cases won a silver medal at the Paris Exposition of 1867. The business sold to Asprey in 1888 and continued to trade in Piccadilly until 1902. They were considered to be the best manufacturer of Boulle inkwells and accessories of the period. N.P. Trent has been a respected name in antiques for over 30 years with a large collection of period furniture, art and decorative accessories.
