Victorian brass inlaid ebonised wood Boulle inkstand English, 19th century Measures: height 12.5cm, width 38cm, depth 23.5cm Made from ebonised wood and inlaid with brass in the manner of the Boulle marquetry technique, this beautiful piece is a Victorian inkstand with two capped inkwells. Pioneered in France in the seventeenth century, and perfected by André-Charles Boulle (French, 1642-1732), the decorative style of this piece involves intricate and extensive brass inlay in scrolling floral motifs that line the length of the work. The two glass inkwells are capped with brass covers, surmounted by a pair of small doves, and a central compartments between the two opens up and is decorated in the same fashion. A fine decorative work, it exemplifies the Boulle style to a fine degree and makes for a wonderful work of English Victorian craftsmanship.
