Victorian Novelty Knife Box Shaped Wooden Inkwell

About the Item

An unusual and stylish British Victorian inkwell in the form of a wooden knife box dating from the 19th century. The box hand crafted in mahogany is of tall shaped with a bellowed round front with flat shaped sides and back. The hinged cover folds back to reveal the original glass inkwell liner and has a hollowed-out reserve possibly for pen nibs. The top is mounted with a blank copper cartouche with a dummy key escutcheon to the lower front body. The base is applied with a velvet protector, probably a later addition and the inkwell is not marked. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market. In good condition with light wear from age and use.
