About the Item

A very rare & important antique Russian Imperial silver gilt & Mother-Of-Pearl letter opener, which belonged to Czar Nicholas II and was taken from the Winter Palace during the 1917 revolution. By the silversmith Karl Järveläinen, St. Petersburg circa 1875. This important piece of silver owned by the Romanov family was acquired from the acclaimed Armand Hammer Gallery in New York City in the 1930s, the gallery had sold Russian Imperial items, including Icons, Faberge eggs & items that belonged to the Romanov family. The letter opener was evidently acquired when the Czar's Winter Palace was besieged by the Bolsheviks in 1917, it is accompanied with the original tag from the Armand Hammer Gallery New York. This important letter opener was used by the last Czar of Russia and could now grace your own desk, condition is excellent.

The shovel shaped spoon having a gilded ground, the handle and rear of the spoon is finely decorated with multicolored floral cloisonne, with jewel tone colors of blue, turquoise, ivory and red. The spoon stem having turned and gilded decoration, the spoon is stamped to the rear of the stem with the maker's marks, silver mark of 84 and the mark for Moscow.
