Small Late 19th Century Chinese Carved Hardwood Brush Pot

About the Item

A Small Late 19th Century Chinese Carved Hardwood Brush Pot This stylishly restrained hexagonal shaped Chinese brush pot is made from dense red hardwood and the eight flat sides are delicately hand carved with a continuous mountain landscape included in which there is a bridge, trees, tall rock faces, a lake, and a temple amongst other details. The brush pot is simply finished around its base with a stepped flat moulding. These interesting pieces were intended to be used by Chinese scholars who would store their calligraphy and art brushes upside down to protect the bristles. Circa 1890 Dimensions: W 6.5 cm (2.6") x D 6.5 cm (2.6") x H 9.5 cm (3.7").
