About the Item
Hollow yet weighted, this contemplative ceramic sculpture is both an object to look at as well as to hold. The center opening creates negative space, suggesting the passing through of thought, time and energy.
Hand formed in stoneware, set up till firm, then cut open and hollowed out. Once put back together it was given a light gray underglaze coating and fired again with a clear gloss glaze. The underglaze breaks along the hand markings in the clay, adding depth and allowing the viewer to follow the Artist's creative process.
Pairs beautifully with oblong white or black cube with oval opening. Or both. Signed with Artist's signature chop on the inside oval.
I can see these on a bookshelf as easily as a pedestal, mantle or table display.

Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Ms. Starcevic's work includes references to the stark beauty of the desert, prehistoric cave paintings, and the human form (within and without). Everything is filtered through Ms. Starcevic’s own singular aesthetic, at once quiet yet strong, meditative, and beautiful. Pieces are made in different clays and finishes, and at different scales. Groupings are available. Helena Starcevic’s ceramic pieces are held in private collections across the US and Europe. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.

By Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Located in New York, NY
Hand built Ceramic Sculpture, in Gray/Green Underglaze. The Gray/Green is hard to capture: more dark gray than green, it has the feeling of the color sage green. The piece is a composite of hollow pods, elongated, pointed oval or elliptical shapes. They are individually hand-formed, attached together and fused during the firing. White stoneware clay with gray/green underglazes create a soft, powdery surface that still shows a bit of texture from the clay. It is not glazed. The Composite Series has an earthy presence, inspired by the huge bare boulders of the Anza Borrego...
