About the Item
we offer for sale an extremely decorative item, in my opinion to have, more than for its function, for its apotropaic power, as an amulet or a talisman that acts as a warning on the desk.
All over the world the "Wolf" is the protagonist of stories and proverbs that have the purpose of teaching moral values and correct behavior.
The Wolf, as well as other animals become allegorical figures, embodying certain human virtues and vices in order to tell a story that always has a moral.
Just think of Aesop's fables, Little Red Riding Hood but also in the Bible.
In Rome, in the city where this piece comes from, and of which the she-wolf is the symbol, one of my favorite proverbs says:
In times of war, even sheep become wolves.
The beauty of the workmanship of this piece and the fact that it makes me think of one of my favorite warnings, has made this object irresistible to me, so much so that I am rather skeptical about selling it.
Usable as a Letter Holder or Paper Clip, it can, given the weight of the large Wolf head, also be used as a paperweight.
Made in Italy around the middle of the 20th century, it has a solid body made with a casting, probably Bronze, subjected to a silver bath.
We subjected it to a deep cleaning but it has not been polished, we preferred to leave it in patina, but with a pass of a specific product for silver, it will come back sparkling.
The manufacturing of these silver metal animal-shaped objects recalls the production of Gucci accessories which included corkscrews, stirrup cups, paper cutters etc. but the item we are offering you does not have any imprinted brands or labels which would allow us to attribute it.
The spring works and the item is in good vintage condition.
It shows signs of use and oxidation mainly on the base that is in contact with the support surface.
All the items visible in the photos are available in our selection.
