About the Item

A rare antique Art Nouveau pewter and brass picture frame by Danish painter and artist Mogens Ballin (1871-1914) produced in the very beginning of the last century. Intricate arts and crafts decor on sleek pewter front with soft elegant lines and stylized flowers. Brass back with functional foot and small lock to easily change the image on display. Stamped MB and numbered T 123 on the back. A museum-quality piece, perfect for collectors of Scandinavian decorative art. A stunning example of early Danish Art Nouveau in beautiful vintage condition! Denmark, 1900. Mogens Hendrik Francesco Ballin (March 20 1871 - Jan 27 1914) was a Danish artist who initially trained as a painted under P.S. Krøyer and Viggo Pedersen (whose father is famed for illustrating the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen). In 1891, after receiving French lessons from Mette Sophie Gad, the wife of Paul Gauguin, Ballin travelled to France and Italy, and was part of the artist group "Les Nabis" along with artists such as Paul Sérusier, Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis and Édouard Vuillard. In 1896 he went back to Copenhagen and in 1899 opened a metal workshop where he produced items of pewter, silver, brass and gold employing artists from Bing & Grøndahl, various gold- and silversmiths and Siegfried Wagner, the former assistant of J.F. Willumsen. Ballin's work was highly influenced by Thorvald Bindesbøll and the German Jugend movement, and he became a key figure in the Danish decorative arts. Ballin's artistic and productive endeavours was a significant inspiration for Georg Jensen and Just Andersen.
