18th Century Italian Hand Carved Baroque Giltwood Reliquary

About the Item

18th century reliquary from northern Italy. Giltwood, polychromed and looks to be hand carved from one piece of wood. Mortised thru the base. A reliquary was used to house a religious relic possibly from a saint or a holy remnant. Could be hair or bone from a saint or martyr, or even dust, pebbles from a Biblical site. This particular piece was brought back by a soldier who purchased it after WW2. It remained in the family until i purchased it. Its in very good condition with normal chips to the giltwood finish, very minor considering its age.
