Björn Selder Modernist Patinated Bronze Sculpture, Sweden 1970s

About the Item

Characteristic for Swedish artist, Björn Selder, are powerful, expressive sculptures, such as this piece, in heavy materials like bronze, iron, and stone. This unique abstract wall sculpture shows that Selder was active as a sculptor and also as a graphic artist. He is represented with numerous monumental sculptures in public environments in Sweden. Swedish sculptor Björn Selder is renowned for his distinctive style that seamlessly merges modern sensibilities with classical influences. His works are characterized by a harmonious blend of fluidity and precision, breathing life into static forms. Selder's sculptures - like this one - often depict organic and abstract forms, capturing the essence of movement, emotion, and introspection. One of the defining aspects of Selder's artistic expression is his preference for bronze as a sculpting material. Bronze offers him a unique combination of durability and malleability. Its enduring nature ensures that his creations stand the test of time, while its pliability allows him to mould intricate details and convey subtle nuances of form and expression. This versatile material accommodates the interesting flow and shapes of Selder's style, enhancing the tactile and visual experience of his sculptures, enhanced by the green patina that naturally develops with time. Bronze holds a timeless allure due to its inherent strength, ability to retain intricate details, and the captivating patina that develops over time. This piece takes advantage of its material fully, with the different hues and the surface of the bronze highlighting the versatile lines that define the surface and conjure images of the flora and of the fauna that surrounds us. Selder's present wall sculpture not only pays homage to the bronze sculpture tradition but also elevates it with a contemporary twist infusing it with his unique blend of abstraction and an unmistakeable contemporary flair. This work invites viewers to engage with the interplay of tradition and innovation, celebrating the enduring appeal of bronze as a medium for artistic expression. Roland Wilhelmsson “Kvadrat” Coffee Table, Sweden 1970s
By Roland Wilhelmsson
Located in Utrecht, NL
Designed by Roland Wilhelmsson, this “Kvadrat” table is from the era when Swedish design and culture started attracting design-conscious international buyers on a large scale. The model’s design is dated to 1972, and this particular table was manufactured in Huskvarna, where the manufactory still operates, for more than four generations now. Swedish furniture and interior design culture went through dramatic changes during the 1970s. The effects of the late 1960s’ rebellious view of design, production and consumption had an impact in the form of freer furnishings and resource-efficient furniture in simpler materials. In the mid-1970s, rustic pine furniture often in oversized dimensions - such as this table - suddenly became the highest fashion. Therefore, the local and resource-efficient craft received a renaissance. This “Kvadrat” coffee table...

Börje Claes Brass Adjustable Wall Lamps for Norlett Elit, Sweden 1970s
By Börje Claes
Located in Utrecht, NL
Swedish Modern, with its simplified lines and lack of excessive ornamentation, was a counter reaction to the earlier, more decorative design movements such as Art Deco. In comparison, as this pair of wall lamps demonstrates, the mid-century era brought streamlined modernism to Sweden as well. Börje Claes designed this polished brass wall lamp model with both table and floor lamp versions. In these wall lamp versions he combined a classical shape with carefully thought out proportions and Swedish craftsmanship. Similarly to the other versions, the necks’ characteristic curve holding the brass shades define this model. To accompany the defined curves, the backplates have a circular shape that mirrors the shape of the shade. The inside of the shade has a patinated metal look to enhance the light the lamp emits with a beautiful effect. While there is a clear attention on the design elements, functionality was of equal importance in the classic “Svensk design” manner, in which form must follow function in order for something to be considered ‘god design’ (sic.). As such, the lamps’ trumpet shades can be adjusted freely on the vertical axis through a so-called knee joint by the German company OMI. In line with the Functionalist trend of the time, the designer abandoned ornamentation in favour of form. Nonetheless, the warmth and beauty inherent in Swedish design is maintained, as well as high-quality craftsmanship provided by Swedish manufacturer, Norlett Elit...
