Brutalist abstract sculpture in black ceramic, Dutch, 1960s

About the Item

Large ceramic sculpture of a figure in expressionist / brutalist style, This sculpture with its black glazing and rough textures emphasizes the strong abstract shapes of a human figure. This sculpture with its rounded shapes, creating compositions that emphasizes the intersection of planes and volumes. This artist explored geometry by simplifying and abstracting the human figure, moving away from naturalistic representation towards a more universal language of form. The sculpture shows influences by Fritz Wotruba and Henry Moore, whose early works were influenced by his exposure to non-Western art, particularly African and Pre-Columbian sculpture. Moore embraced the principles of modernism, rejecting academic conventions in favor of abstraction and experimentation. During this period, Moore explored themes of motherhood and the human figure, producing sculptures characterized by simplified, organic forms and a sense of monumentality, a similar tread found in this work.
