About the Item
Yulia Batyrova started working with ceramics five years ago. From the very beginning, she was keen on experimenting with form, materials and graphics in search of her own style. Since 2020 Batyrova is united in a creative tandem with her husband Marat Mukhametov. The core of Yulia and Marat's work is experimentation with porcelain, combined with concrete and other media. Thoughts or emotions in their purest form, an attempt to capture something intangible, rapidly escaping and constantly changing, is one of the main themes of their research.
The artists create their objects out of thousands of porcelain elements that, when stacked together, take on different intuitive abstract forms, creating a sense of constant movement. The subtle differences in every detail are the result of working by hand.
Direct Hit was created as a part of the 'Wounds Leave Scars' exhibition held at Mia Karlova Galerie in 2023. It was their chance to talk openly and honestly about the war in Russia. In their own words they say; "We are convinced that it is of crucial importance not to remain silent, which is why we have been rebuilding a workshop in Turkey and dedicated the last six months to a series of works on the theme of war and protest against Putin's regime. These works are an attempt to understand the current situation and resist the rhetoric of hatred and the justification of imperial ambitions".
