Lo scultore napoletano Luigi Mazzella si esprime col bronzo, con il legno, l’argento, la ceramica, il ferro e anche il piombo. le sue ultime opere, grandi e monumentali sono realizzate in piombo, che è l’elemento dell’alchimista, che si trasforma in oro alla fine del processo conoscitivo, e di purificazione con l’aiuto della pietra filosofale che muta i metalli vili in metallo nobile Il piombo quindi è intrinsecamente nobile perchè contiene in sè la capacità del cambiamento, è pesante ma duttile, si illumina di riflessi argentei, lunari e pure caldi. Mazzella è figlio del Barocco Meridionale, che nella metamorfosi trovava l’equilibrio tra umano e naturale, tra luce e ombre, tra vita e morte, tra effimero ed eterno, tra corruttibile ed incorruttibile.
