20th Century Burl Wood Sculpture of a Ram's Head by Edwin Bucher (1879-1968)

About the Item

This stunning burl wood sculpture of a ram's head, crafted by renowned Swiss sculptor Edwin Bucher, showcases the artist's mastery of form and texture. Born in Lucerne, Switzerland, on March 14, 1879, Bucher initially studied art and craftsmanship in Geneva and Paris before finding his true calling in sculpture. Under the tutelage of esteemed French masters Antoine Bourdelle and Auguste Rodin in Paris, Bucher honed his skills and developed a distinctive style marked by lifelike precision and emotional depth. Bucher's sculptural repertoire, which encompasses portraits and depictions of animals, earned him acclaim both nationally and internationally. Notable works such as "The Bull," acquired by the French State, exemplify his ability to capture the essence of his subjects with remarkable authenticity. Beyond his artistic endeavors, Bucher actively contributed to the art community, serving on juries and committees in Paris and Zurich. Despite his artistic success, Bucher's life was not without controversy. In 1928, he was involved in a shooting incident during a domestic dispute, resulting in injury to another individual. However, his legacy endures through his exceptional craftsmanship and dedication to sculpting the beauty and complexity of life. Edwin Bucher passed away on December 13, 1968, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy that continues to inspire and provoke contemplation.
