About the Item
A superb Modernist model of a Gazelle by Walter Rotan (1912-2001) with a very dark verdigris patina.
Cast at the Roman Bronze Works in the 1930s or 1940s.
The bronze is stamped Roman Bronze Corp. NY to the reverse and bears an integral signature in the plinth.
Rotan was an important 20th century American sculptor. A student of Albert Laessle, Rotan's work is held in public and private collections throughout the country. During his lifetime, his work was exhibited in the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Art.
A similar gazelle is incorporated into his sculpture installed at Brookgreen Gardens.
References include Beartrice Gilman Proske's 1968 book entitled Brookgreen Garden Sculpture.
