About the Item

A rare and whimsical example of a French fairground carved wooden pig it was most likely from the traveling manèges forains (carousel rides). His happy, upturned head shows a red apple in his mouth, inset glass eyes, and a carved saddle accented with zigzag harness straps. Traces of the original polychrome finish remain — soft greens, warm browns, and deep reds — beautifully worn from decades of use. It is typical of the Belle Époque era when French artisans created fantastical carousel animals to delight children and adults alike. Non-horse carousel figures, like this delightful pig, are particularly sought after for their rarity and charm.
