About the Item

I purchased this item directly. The purchaser said that it belonged to his late grandfather. His grandfather served as a marine from World War I to World War II, and apparently purchased this wooden elephant as a souvenir when he visited India aboard the Akagi battleship around 1920. The tusks are broken and missing, but there are no other major defects. Unlike the cute elephant souvenirs made today, this is an attractive sculpture that exudes strength. The king of animals quietly steps on the earth. In India, elephants have been sacred and respected since ancient times, and are said to have exerted their power in transportation and war. This sculpture, which seems to be imbued with such meaning, still exudes charm even after more than 100 years. The square base of this item is thought to have been prepared by the grandfather. There is something that resembles a name written on the back of the base, but it is faded and cannot be deciphered. It seems that the owner treasured it enough to have a base. I don't know what kind of wood the elephant is made of, but it is very heavy. The base seems to be made of oak or similar material. I would be grateful if anyone who purchases this item will cherish it and display it while remembering the story behind it. It is unlikely that the same item will be available in the future. A highly rare item. Weight: 2.85 kg We mainly sell old Japanese items, but also items from around the world. We have seen tens of thousands of items so far. Rare Japanese antique wooden god statue /12th century/small wabi-sabi figurines
Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba
I was able to obtain a very rare item. This is a sculpture of the god ``Shinzo''. "Shin" = God "zo" = statue Since ancient times in Japan, it has been believed that gods reside in all things in the universe, and there have been many shrines. In the 6th century, Buddhism was introduced and gradually spread throughout Japan. Around the 8th century, the idea that gods follow the teachings of Buddha spread. Until the Edo period, God and Buddha became one and the idea of ``Shinto and Buddhism syncretism'' was established. This statue was created during such a history. Originally, the image of God was invisible and could not be understood as something tangible. However, with the introduction of Buddhism to Japan, idol worship was also introduced, and the idea that the gods follow the teachings of Buddha was also propagated at the same time in order to spread the teachings of Buddhism. Around that time, around the 9th century, the first statues of gods...

Great Wood Carving Lion Figurine / 1868-1920 / Rare Item
Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba
This looks like an old copperware, but it is a wood carving work. It is glossy because it is finished with black lacquer. It is a very delicate and beautiful sculpture. The expression of the lion is cool. Also, the sculpture on the tail is wonderful. It is thought that it was carved on wood such as Japanese cypress. The name of the engraver is also engraved. The name "Kichitaro" is engraved. I don't know the details of this person. There are also small cracks and defects. There is a loss in the lower part of his right ear and part of his tail. And there are lacquer cracks and wood cracks. This is an old one, so there is something like this. Also, in the case of Japanese and Chinese lions, a ball is attached to the left hand, but this is missing. However, it is a work that is quite impressive. It is a rare item...
