Antique Japanese Bronze Turtle – Meiji to Early Showa Period

About the Item

Antique Japanese Bronze Turtle – Meiji to Early Showa Period (Late 19th to Early 20th Century) This Japanese bronze turtle is an exceptional example of metalwork from the Meiji period (1868-1912), or possibly the early Showa period (1926-1989). Known for their fine craftsmanship, Japanese artisans during these periods created detailed and naturalistic representations of animals, with turtles symbolising longevity and wisdom in Japanese culture. The turtle’s shell features intricate spiral patterns and floral motifs, common in the decorative style of the period. The detailed execution of the head, feet, and body reflects the exceptional skill typical of Meiji-era artisans. The bronze has developed a beautiful patina with verdigris in certain areas, adding to its authenticity and character. Light rubbing and minor wear are consistent with age but do not detract from the overall quality. This piece comes from the estate of a distinguished collector of Oriental antiques, providing valuable provenance to the item.
