Antique Japanese stone lion statue/19th century/Edo period/Garden decoration

About the Item

We are pleased to introduce this charming Komainu (guardian lion-dog) statue, believed to have been crafted in the late Edo period of Japan (mid-1800s). Komainu are mythical guardian creatures that have long protected Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples across Japan, serving to ward off evil spirits. They are typically found in pairs—one with its mouth open (“Agyō”) and the other closed (“Ungyō”)—symbolizing the beginning and end of all things. This particular piece stands out for its endearing appearance. Rather than aiming for realism or grandeur, it features a simple, almost humorous expression that naturally invites a smile from the viewer. Unlike the fierce and imposing figures often seen at shrine gates, this Komainu radiates a sense of warmth and familiarity, creating a gentle presence. Stone-carved Komainu come in many regional styles throughout Japan, and this small-scale, charming type is often found in the southern Kyushu region. However, the exact origin of this piece remains uncertain. It was acquired in Gunma Prefecture, suggesting it may have been carved somewhere in the Kanto area. Crafted from granite, the statue has a rustic yet solid texture that adds to its visual depth. Though modest in size, it holds a strong presence and can be beautifully integrated into various spaces—whether placed beside a garden stone, near an entryway, or as a sculptural accent within the home. The piece shows no major cracks or losses and remains in excellent condition for its age. Its gentle form and textured surface offer a unique aesthetic that modern reproductions simply cannot replicate. This work carries with it a quiet kindness and timeless charm, making it a truly special addition to any space. Highly recommended. Weight: 13.75kg Item Code: SC113
