About the Item

Art deco bronze circa 1930 representing two crested titmice with brown and green patina on a portor marble base signed on the bronze M. Guillemard for Marcel Guillemard. In perfect condition Total height: 37 cm Length: 77 cm Width: 16 cm Marcel Joseph Henri Guillemard was a French decorator and designer, born on 2 September 1886 in Paris and died on 19 December 1932 in Avon. He was the first emblematic designer and designer of the Primavera workshop at the Printemps department stores'. He advocated individual comfort as a luxury that should be present in all homes. His interest in mass-produced furniture brought so-called modern works into the home. His inspiration was based on the discoveries of Cubism, which he exercised without excess and with a rare sense of moderation. Marcel Guillemard, with the spirit of a soldier monk, was deeply involved in the ambitions of the Primavera workshop, whose unique cause he shared. He recruited Louis Sognot, whose mutual inspiration was often a source of confusion when it came to identifying some of their creations. His untimely death on 19 December 1932 deprived him of a destiny, on the doorstep of the Union des artistes modernes. Marcel Guillemard's intense creative activity was not limited to the creation of furniture and furniture ensembles, but also to his work as a decorator, which found applications in the major commercial events that were the small modern decorative arts fairs. The organisation and layout of these exhibitions, and the renewal of the appearance of the window displays and stalls at Printemps. The success of these remarkable exhibitions, organised by the Printemps department stores, was eagerly awaited, and still is every year, by art critics and a host of visitors. Guillemard was the architect of these major ensembles, which had to be prepared, assembled and organised in a matter of days, revealing a formidable energy made up of fantasy and dreams, the true story of which is difficult to reconstruct: "I can believe that it is really to his impetus that we owe the success of these remarkable exhibitions6 ". At the time, the Primavera furniture design studio was run by two people: for the ladies, M. Sougez20 , and for the men, Marcel Guillemard as head of the studio, who coordinated the work of the designers: L. Sognot, J.Louis, H. Boulenger, J.Brieu, H. Boudier, Espérance, R. Favreau, A. Mozer, P. Pinsard, A. Rigoulot, P. Siegrist.
