About the Item

title " Avant L'Attaque" / "Before the attack" “Before the Attack” is a bronze sculpture by the Belgian sculptor Alfons Lambert Baggen (1862-1937). This work, created between 1900 and 1920, depicts a dynamic animal scene featuring a predator ready to attack. The sculpture is signed “A. Baggen” and bears the mark of the H. Jamais foundry in Antwerp. A notable feature of this piece is that the elephant’s tusk is made of wood, adding a unique dimension to the work. This work has been exhibited in several exhibitions, including “Artists of Borgerhout 19th Century” at the District House in 1989, and “Rembrandt Bugatti and Belgian Animal Sculpture” at the Hessenhuis in Antwerp in 1990. Similar sculptures are also listed in the 1975 “Kunstpatrimonium” of the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp. Some of Baggen’s works are kept at the Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Important note! Due to the amendment to the CITES legislation, the ivory tusk has been replaced by a wooden tusk.
