Ceramic turkey collection

About the Item

The collection includes eleven ceramic sculptures, depicting turkeys in various techniques and sizes. Specifically: One is colored ceramic; one is hand-painted bisque; the smaller one is glazed porcelain; two are galvanized (i.e., covered with metal); and the four white ones are majolica (one has gold trim). It is a valuable collection because of its rarity and uniqueness. A noteworthy element is the fact that most of them are signed. Among the most prominent signatures are those of "Cacciapuoti" and "Zaccagnini." "Ugo Zaccagnini & Figli" (later "Società Anonima Ceramiche Zaccagnini," then "Zaccagnini S.p.A.") was a manufacturer of majolica and ceramic objects from 1905 to 2000, founded by Ugo Zaccagnini (1868-1937). The Cacciapuoti were a family of Neapolitan majolica makers active in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries in Naples and later in Milan. It must be remembered that the turkey is a uniquely American animal, introduced to Europe only with the discovery of America. The turkey is an important symbol for American culture, playing a central role in the Thanksgiving celebration.
