Rare large French Art Deco elephant sculpture by Charles LEMANCEAU at Saint-Clement (Luneville), France, 1920s. French Art Deco ceramic. Width: 18.5"(47cm), Height: 11.8"(30cm), Depth: 6.7"(17cm). Marked "France 978 1" on the base (see photo). Illustrated in the Saint-Clement's catalogue. Three sizes were available. This one is the largest size. This size in the white color is very very rare, an exceptional piece in a collection of Art Deco crackle glaze ceramic animals.

Charles Lemanceau
Charles Lemanceau was born in 1905 in Paris. In 1923, he worked for Primavera. In 1925, he exhibited in the Salon d'Automne with his fellows Eugene Printz, Louis Sognot, Van Dongen, Vlaminck, Raoul Dufy, Jean Dunand, Henri Matisse, Le Corbusier, Jules Leleu, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Fernand Leger and Maurice Utrillo. In this period, he worked for Saint-Clement and DIM. From 1930, he worked for Maurice Dufrene, Primavera and Sainte-Radegonde. He was a specialist of animal sculptures, and is one of the most important sculptors in the French Art Deco period.
