About the Item

This refined early 20th-century French animalier sculpture depicts a proud and alert stag in mid-stride, cast in patinated spelter and raised on a polished black marble base. Signed on the base M. Leducq (1879–1955), a French sculptor known for his naturalistic bronzes of deer, dogs, and other wildlife produced during the Art Deco and interwar periods. Leducq was active throughout the early to mid-20th century, creating decorative and expressive representations of animals that blended anatomical accuracy with elegant stylization. His works were often cast in bronze or spelter and typically mounted on marble bases, as seen in this example. While many of his pieces feature dogs or smaller woodland animals, stag sculptures by Leducq are less common and especially sought after for their dramatic scale and compositional balance. Executed circa 1920, this piece captures the majestic quality of the animal with sculptural finesse, the branching antlers, detailed musculature, and raised posture all contributing to its commanding presence. The metal displays a warm verdigris patina that enhances the textured modeling, while the sleek marble base adds visual weight and contrast. Measuring 14.25 inches wide by 15.75 inches high, the sculpture is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use. A distinguished and collectible example of French decorative sculpture, it would make a striking addition to a study, mantel, or library, particularly for collectors of animalier art or early 20th-century French bronzes.
