About the Item
ANIMALIA BRONZE SCULPTURE
From our Bronze Sculpture collection, we are pleased to present this German Bloodhound Dog Bronze Group by W. Prehn. The substantial group is cast upon a naturalistic base, showing a recumbent bloodhound bitch feeding three puppies, while another climbs across her back and a fifth rests playfully on the ground. The composition captures both tenderness and vitality, with careful attention given to the individual forms and character of each dog. The grassy base includes a collar to one side and is signed by the artist W. Prehn, thought to have been a German artist trained in France before turning to sculpture. The bronze is notable for its weight and the impressive detail visible throughout the casting.
Dating to the second half of the 19th century, circa 1860, this bronze group carries particular historical interest. Further research suggests it may be a unique cast, probably made from a terracotta mould and acquired by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm directly from the artist before Boehm’s move to England. Its qualities suggest it was conceived by an artist with a painterly eye for composition and form rather than a traditional bronze sculptor, giving it a distinctive character.
This is an important piece for collectors of 19th-century animalier bronzes, combining strong presence with remarkable detail.
