Glazed Ceramic Bear Sculpture by Carl Johan Bonnesen, Denmark

About the Item

Carl Johan Bonnesen, 1868–1933 Rare and impressive unique sculpture of two courting bears, crafted in glazed ceramic with a striking copper-rich glaze featuring vivid tonal variation. The glaze clearly references classical Song dynasty ceramics, reinterpreted in a bold and distinctly Nordic expression. Signed: Carl J. Bonnesen Very good condition with a few minor, insignificant chips. Denmark, c. 1900 About the artist: Carl Johan Bonnesen was one of Denmark’s leading sculptors in the early 20th century, renowned for his powerful and naturalistic depictions of animals. A graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and a student of Vilhelm Bissen, Bonnesen's work is represented in major Danish collections, including the National Gallery of Denmark and Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek.
