About the Item

An Irish bog oak hand carved inkstand in the form of an owl Attributed to Cornelius Goggin, Dublin Ireland This exceptional bog oak inkstand is of a very rare and desirable form. It is beautifully hand carved as a perched pet owl. It is a museum quality item of a very large scale and was most likely carved by the renowned Irish bog oak carver, Cornelius Goggin who had his workshop at 13 Nassau Street, Dublin where he received a Royal warrant entitled Irish Bog Oak Carver to Her Majesty. There is a very similar owl inkstand in the National Museum of Ireland which bears an original maker’s label from Cornelius Goggin. This fine large example is exquisitely detailed. The owl sits on a moulded shamrock carved plinth. The owl is perched and secured with a brass chain and clasp. It also has brass talons and a brass collar around its leg. The very natural eyes are inlaid and made from glass. The head is hinged and opens to reveal a circular cavity where a glass ink pot would once have been (now missing). This wonderful object is in very good original condition. Irish, circa 1880 Height 21cm x width 12.5cm x depth 12.5cm.
