About the Item
Antonio Castillo Mexican Modernist hand hammered and oxidized copper owl sculpture. A similar work by Antonio is pictured on the cover of 1966 issue of Artes de Mexico. The magazine is included with the sculpture.
Antonio was one of William Sprating’s earliest apprentices at Taller Las Delicias in the historic town of Taxco, Mexico. Antonio Castillo joined Spratling in 1933 at the age of sixteen. He initially went to Spratling to learn English, but Antonio actually became a master artist in his own right. With his brothers, he left Spratling in 1939 to begin their own studio, the renowned Los Castillo.
Los Castillo, the well-known Mexican silversmiths of Taxco, refers to the taller established by brothers Antonio, Jorge, Miguel and Justo Castillo.
