About the Item

A luxurious gold- and silver-plated bronze escargot or snail cocktail stick set made in France c. 1930. It is a superb Hollywood Regency conversation piece, perfect for eating not just escargots but also for a variety of amuse bouches or martini olives in drinks when entertaining. The snail is fantastically modelled, with realistic detailing to both the body and the shell. The snail is finished with a thick layer of high carat gold plating, and sits upon a silver-plated oak leaf. The combination of silver and gold, both retaining a superb luster, together with the excellent quality of the modelling, gives this cocktail set a truly luxurious feel. It is a complete set and comes with its original 12 gold plated cocktail sticks, pointed to both ends, that fix into their corresponding holes in the shell. The fashion for novelty cocktail stick sets was a very French phenomenon that began in the 1920s and continued through till the 1950s. A distinctive cocktail stick set epitomised the French ‘art de vivre’. There were innumerable interpretations on the theme, but amongst the most desirable motifs, the snail or escargot is without doubt the most iconic. This particular example is one of the finest quality you will find: the excellence of the modelling, the attention to detail, the gold and silver plating, and the dynamic presence of the object make it a true conversation piece. It was most probably retailed in an important jewelry store in France in the Art Deco period of the 20th century. It is in excellent condition, with only a little wear to the plating on some of the sticks, and let’s be honest, there is no way of eating your escargots in a more beautiful and elegant fashion!
