About the Item

Pair of Italian Stoneware Lions After Antonio Canova, 19th Century A striking pair of reclining lions in stoneware, inspired by the monumental sculptures created by Antonio Canova (1757–1822) for the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome. These expressive lions, one watchful and alert, the other resting with closed eyes, are faithful in form and attitude to Canova’s neoclassical originals. According to provenance, this pair originated from a now-closed monastery in the Piedmont region of Italy, built in 1847. Their worn surfaces and earthy tones exhibit a rich patina that speaks to their age and history. Whether displayed indoors as classical sculpture or used as bold and elegant bookends, these lions bring gravitas and timeless beauty to any setting. Wear consistent with age and use.
