About the Item

A life-Size pair of finely cast 19th century Italian terracotta eagles standing on an oval terracotta base, each facing the other with their wings partially upswept after a 1st Century AD Roman Original now displayed in Gosford Park England. The original marble eagle was discovered near the baths of Caracalla in Rome in 1742. It was acquired by Horace Walpole in 1745 and had it displayed at his estate called Strawberry Hill in Middlesex from 1747 to 1842. When the contents of Strawberry Hill were auctioned of in 1842 it was acquired by Earl Fitzwiliam and later by Lord Wemyss who had it grace his estate in Gosford near Longniddry where it is to this day. There is an Italian 17th century counterpart to this piece in another English Country home Stratfield Skye plus other representations consisting of two marble eagles very similar to this pair in the Palazzo Dei Conservatori in Rome and a bronze version at the J. Paul Getty Museum in California.
