About the Item

Rare and Unique Model From our Black Forest collection, we are delighted to introduce this rare example Swiss Black Forest Bear Tobacco Jar. The Bear Tobacco Jar carved from Linden wood with a fantastic humours expression common with Black Forest carvings with the bear having its tongue stuck out standing upon a rocky outcrop with walking stick in hand and small turned vesta bowl. The Bear well carved with naturalistic flair is hinged to the centre with a hollowed out body allowing the user to store tobacco. The Bear holds a small turned bowl in its left hand perfect for storing matches in while the Bear stands ready for use. The Swiss Black Forest Bear Tobacco Jar dates to the dates to the late 19th century circa 1890. Black Forest is a term used to describe the elaborate, realistic carvings of a vast array of wooden pieces such as clocks and animals. Our Black Forest collection at Jacksons Antique features varying objects of highly desirable carvings such as woodland animal Tobacco Jars. Our aim is to supply that breathtaking piece of Black Forest to add that special edge to any collection or home. Commonly thought to originate from the Black Forest in Bavaria Germany, Black Forest carvings actually originate from Switzerland. The most recogniseable Black Forest carvings are usually bears carved amongst different pieces such as hat stands, tables and whimsical figures. Black Forest products can also be seen carved into other forest wildlife as well as clocks, music boxes and furniture although these are more uncommon making them highly desirable. Black Forest items are usually very easy to identify due to the wood, colour and the subjects. Frequently the animals play instruments and can be incorporated into climbing trees, holding benches or begging as part of the Black Forest furniture. Each of the pieces are usually carved from a linden or walnut tree trunk and unsigned. However the earlier pieces can be seen to be signed by renowned carvers such as Johann Huggler and Ruef Brothers.

By Black Forest
Located in Newark, England
Cigar Cutter & Vesta Case From our Black Forest collection, we are delighted to offer this very rare and unusual Swiss Black Forest carving of a tobacco jar shaped as a Blacksmiths Anvil complete with secret compartment and secret catch. The Black Forest Anvil stands upon a wooden tree trunk base realistically carved with wood knots. Beside the anvil sits an ebonised decorative carved hammer and a pair of pliers that have a cigar cutter built in between them. When the cigar is placed and cut using the pliers, the cap end falls into a basket through a small chute carved into the side of the trunk. The Anvil at the top of the contains a hidden vesta compartment for storing matches and is accessed via the hidden horse shoe catch in the top of the anvil when turned a quarter the catch releases and the top of the anvil can be removed. To access the tobacco jar in the centre a second secret catch can be pushed to unlock the lid which pivots open. To open the catch a small oval section of the base must be pressed down which releases the spring loaded lid. The hollowed centre contains the original foil lining for storing the tobacco.
