Rembrandt Bugatti "Flamant en Marche" Bronze Sculpture

About the Item

Rembrandt Bugatti's "Flamant en Marche" also known as "Walking Flamingo" features a flamingo standing on two legs, a classic pose that highlights its slender, S-shaped neck and delicate, long legs. The sculptor has meticulously rendered the flamingo’s body with smooth, flowing lines that capture the essence of its lithe, flexible form. The bird's right leg, raised slightly off the ground, is carefully positioned to convey the sense of balance and poise of a real flamingo. Bugatti has sculpted in bronze the intricate detailing of the flamingo's feathers, using a variety of textures and finishes to mimic the soft, downy plumage and the delicate, overlapping feathers. The feathers are depicted with fine lines and subtle ridges, creating a sense of movement and softness despite the solidity of the bronze medium. Item #: YB-21608 Artist: Rembrandt Bugatti Country: France Circa: 1912 Dimensions: 13" height, 8" width, 4.75" depth. Materials: Patinated Bronze Signed: Bugatti and stamped with foundry mark Cire Perdue AA Hébrard Literature: V. Fromanger, "Rembrandt Bugatti sculpteur: répertoire monographique : une trajectoire foudroyante", Paris, 2016, p. 303, no. 137 Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: The flamingos at the Antwerp zoo were kept in a flamingo pool. The surface of the bronze is hard, the modeling crisp and angular, and detail is pared down to accentuate the bird’s sleek, hard lines. The curve of its neck breaks the composition, giving the sculpture a softer appearance.

Rembrandt Bugatti "Panthère assise" Bronze Sculpture
By Rembrandt Bugatti
Located in New York, NY
In "Panthère assise" also known as "Seated Panther," Bugatti seems to have been concerned primarily with musculature. The uneven surface exaggerates the contours of muscles which in turn causes a curious effect: weightiness from the amplified muscles and lightness created by the myriad reflecting planes. Bugatti’s sculpture relies on asymmetry, with nearly half of the composition occupied by the panther’s horizontally extended tail. The curve of the tail rises, flowing into the S-shaped arc of the panther’s movement, accentuating the dynamic form of the great cat.
