About the Item
Vintage 1950s Ceramic Figure of a Sailor and a Monkey by Helen König Scavini for Tanagra, Torino
This charming and rare vintage ceramic figure is a delightful creation by the celebrated artist Helen König Scavini for the Italian company, Tanagra of Turin (Torino). Dating back to the 1950s, this piece showcases the playful and expressive style of the era.
The figure depicts a barefoot sailor seated on a barrel, dressed in a classic white and blue striped shirt, and wearing a sailor's cap with a small red detail. He is holding a banana in his hands, which he shares with a mischievous monkey perched on his shoulder. The monkey, also holding a banana, looks on with an engaging expression. The details are beautifully rendered, from the folds in the sailor's white pants to the texture of the monkey's fur. The figure is hand-painted with a vibrant gloss finish, adding to its whimsical character.
The base of the figure is clearly marked with the signature "Tanagra Torino ITALIA" and is numbered "N/110," indicating that it is a limited edition piece. There is also another mark "LM" possibly for the sculptor or model number. This detail is highly important for collectors as it authenticates the piece and its limited production. Excellent vintage condition. Please refer to photos for a detailed view of the marks and the overall condition.
This is a beautiful and rare piece of Italian art, a true testament to the skill and artistry of the mid-20th century.
